“ Gympie train station has been lovingly restored and the cafeteria has a good range of food and coffee but remember to get your coffee order in 30 minutes prior to departure. The trip takes you south out of Gympie through the rolling hills of rural Queensland. giving good views of rivers and bushland. The train itself is comfortable and the staff provide good insights into how the railway works. The rotation of the engine on the turntable at Armour is a fascinating and efficient operation. If you are in the area, get yourself a ticket and take a trip back in time on the Mary Valley Rattler.

1 year agoMy husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Rattler experience. From our arrival at the amazing old Gympie Railway Station and to experience its original features it just set the tone for the next few hours. We started with a lovely coffee and scone at the cafe - both were excellent. We also visited a very well stocked gift shop. When the train pulled up to the station prior to departing on our journey we were able to spend time appreciating the amazing steam engine and the lovingly restored carriages - the carriages had come from all over Queensland to be used for the Rattler. After a few happy pics we were able to talk to a few of the many volunteers who provided so much information about the train and the upcoming journey in a friendly and engaging manner. We then boarded our allocated carriage. The day was magnificent and complemented the lovely scenery along the way- rolling hills, amazing bridges, tunnels and a patchwork of small clusters of old and new homes. After reaching Amamoor the highlight definitely was the engine being turned around on the turntable . Back on board and our return journey was just as enjoyable. I would certainly recommend this experience to family and friends
1 year agoWas so much fun. I love that all the locals wave to the train from the back of their houses and even the cars driving along the road were all waving. The staff were great also and we had a nice stop to have a picnic with some live performers and a market stall. My son had a great time waving. Back to everyone.
1 year agoUnfortunately due to the weather my experience was cancelled. I was given a call to confirm the details and issued a voucher to use in the future. So when I visit the area next time I can get to experience the Mary Rattler finally, as I have done a few steam train adventures in other states.
2 years agoWe took the Rattler from Amamoor to Gympie return. A beautiful sunny winter's day. The set up at Amamoor is very good with cafe and restrooms in a pretty area next to the track. The train ride is good (and slow). For me it got more interesting as it approached Gympie. The setup at Gympie station is even more polished with a restaurant and well presented facilities. The staff and volunteers were a stand out, helpful, professional, knowledgable, friendly and keen to make the whole experience fun.
4 years agoI arrived at Gympie station where the train was going to depart. I entered the station to get my ticket and was greeted by a friendly team member who issued my ticket. When I was issued my ticket, I was also issued with some information on the journey train. Inside the station, had photos of the history of the train. While waiting to board the train, I had a cup of coffee and was serviced by a friendly team member. They also have a menu where you can get food and drink at reasonable prices. I went on the station and talked to talk to the train driver, who had been driving the train for over 20 years. He was friendly, told me the history of the train, which I found interesting. I boarded the train and was greeted by a friendly team. We departed from the station and while the journey was on, information was broadcast about the history of the train. We went through scenic countryside which was beautiful. I found that the team members who really enjoyed their job and had a passion for it. Arrived back to Gympie station to be greeted again and thanked for travelling. I would recommend this experience. You won't be disappointed.
5 years agoWhat a wonderful day out for all ages. The volunteers are so dedicated and friendly. We couldn’t ask for better service. We commenced our trip at Amamoor to Gympie and back. Loved the cheese tasting as Dagun. And the lunch at Gympie railway was excellent. I recommend this trip to everybody.
